Day 1: Ashgabat to Mary – From Ancient Heritage to Local Life
Your day begins in Ashgabat with a visit to the National Museum of History & Ethnography, where the story of Turkmenistan unfolds across centuries. As you explore its halls, discover ancient artifacts, early tools, ceramics, and geological finds that reveal the deep roots of human life in the region. The exhibits offer a clear and engaging introduction to the country’s history, culture, and natural landscape.
After the visit, depart Ashgabat and travel east toward Mary. The journey takes you across wide desert landscapes, following routes once used by Silk Road travelers connecting Central Asia. The changing scenery and sense of distance give a feeling of the vastness that has shaped life in this region.
Arriving in Mary, explore the city and its everyday rhythm. Visit the lively Mary Bazaar, where stalls display fresh produce, spices, and local goods, offering a glimpse into daily life. Continue to the Russian Orthodox Church, one of the oldest in the country, reflecting the area’s cultural diversity. Afterward, transfer to your hotel and settle in for the night in Mary.

Day 2: Mary – Merv – Ashgabat | The Legacy of the Silk Road
After breakfast, depart Mary for a short drive to the ancient city of Merv, once known as the “Queen of the World” and one of the great centers of Islamic civilization, alongside Baghdad, Cairo, and Damascus. Walking through this vast archaeological site, you step into layers of history that span millennia. Explore the imposing Greater and Lesser Gyz Gala, fortress-like structures rising from the desert, and continue to Erk Gala and Gyaur Gala, the oldest parts of the city, where the earliest settlements once stood. Visit the religious and cultural complexes, including the Askhabs and Hoja Yusup Hamadani, before reaching the impressive Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum, a masterpiece of Seljuk architecture. The Muhamed Ibn Zeid Mausoleum adds a quieter, refined note to this remarkable historical landscape.
After exploring Merv, return to Mary and visit the Mary History Museum, where the region’s story is brought together through a rich collection of artifacts, offering insight into local culture from ancient times to the present.
In the afternoon, begin the journey back to Ashgabat, crossing once again the wide desert landscapes that have connected cities and civilizations for centuries. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and overnight in Ashgabat.

At the scheduled time, transfer to Ashgabat International Airport for your departure. As you leave, the memories of the Silk Road, the timeless ruins of Merv, and the vibrant local life will remain long after the journey ends.
