Somaliland
A Hidden Corner of the Horn: Rock Art, Camel Markets & Gulf of Aden Shores

Discover
Somaliland
Compact yet varied, Somaliland makes an adventurous short itinerary. Base yourself in Hargeisa, then link Berbera’s coast with the cool Sheikh highlands and the ancient art of Laas Geel. With local guides - and permits where required - you can weave culture, coast, and mountain landscapes into one memorable trip.
Adventure Highlights:
- Hike the Sheikh Pass and Golis Mountains with a local guide; stick to established tracks to protect fragile desert vegetation.
- Visit Laas Geel’s prehistoric rock art—never touch the paintings, avoid leaning on the shelters, and keep flash off to prevent damage.
- Swim or snorkel near Berbera using reef-safe sunscreen and leave shells and corals where they belong.
Cultural Encounters:
- Somaliland is predominantly Muslim: dress modestly, be mindful around Friday prayers and Ramadan, and always ask before photographing people—especially women.
- Hire registered local guides/drivers and obtain required permits or escorts for certain routes; your fees help communities and conservation.
- In markets and camel trading yards, observe first, negotiate politely, and avoid blocking traders at work.
Local Life & Flavors:
- Choose locally owned cafés and guesthouses; try canjeero, spiced shaah (tea), fresh seafood on the coast, and camel milk where offered.
- Carry a refillable bottle or filter to reduce single-use plastic; pack out all litter in remote areas.
- Buy frankincense, woven mats, and handicrafts directly from cooperatives; never purchase antiquities or wildlife products, and tip fairly for services.

Hargeisa
Lively and approachable, Hargeisa is the natural base for exploring Somaliland. Wander the central markets, watch the dawn camel trade, see the MiG-17 war memorial, and snap the famous “money changers” stacks of Somaliland shillings. Cafés, colorful street art, and friendly street life make it an easy place to settle in and arrange permits and day trips.

Laas Geel Rock Art
An hour from Hargeisa, Laas Geel shelters some of Africa’s best-preserved prehistoric paintings. Under granite overhangs you’ll spot vivid scenes of cattle, hunters, and wildlife thought to be thousands of years old. Short walks link the caves, and the hilltop setting delivers wide desert views—go with a local guide/permit for access.

Berbera
This historic Gulf of Aden port pairs sun-bleached coral-stone architecture with long, quiet beaches. Stroll the old quarter’s Ottoman- and British-era buildings, then head to the shore for swimming and snorkeling in clear water. Evenings bring sea breezes, fresh seafood, and glowing sunsets over the harbor.
