Day 1: Gateway to the Horn of Africa – Welcome to Djibouti
Your adventure begins in the heart of Djibouti City, whether you arrive directly from the airport or start from your hotel. This vibrant capital is the beating heart of the nation—home to 70% of the country’s population and the hub of all economic life.
We begin with a panoramic drive through the city, making photo stops that highlight its unique contrasts: the bustling Balbala district, a vibrant and densely populated quarter; the area surrounding the foreign military bases, a reminder of Djibouti’s strategic importance; the port panorama, where ships and fishing boats share the waters; the historic Chinese-built railway connecting Djibouti to Addis Ababa; and the sleek Djibouti marina facing the old port.
The second part of the day takes us on foot through the charm of Old Djibouti. Here, European colonial architecture blends with lively markets—wander through the souk’s labyrinth of stalls, where spices, fabrics, and everyday goods create a kaleidoscope of colors and scents, and explore the vibrant flea market, an experience that fully immerses you in the city’s daily rhythm.

Day 2: Journey Across the Desert Plains to the Surreal Shores of Lake Abbe
After breakfast, we set out for Dikhil, a small town on the edge of the desert. The road takes us past the Gulf of Tadjourah viewpoint in Arta, the lively village of Wea—perfect for picking up fresh almonds—and across the open stretches of Small Bara and the vast Grand Bara Desert, where we leave the tarmac for a shortcut across the hard, sunbaked plain.
In Dikhil, we pause for a short visit before enjoying a local lunch. The afternoon brings a change of pace as we follow an impressive route through the Gobaad region, home to ostriches, Thomson’s gazelles, and the rare giraffe gazelle. Passing through the villages of Asseilla and Koutabouya, we see where former nomadic families have built new lives in this remote area.
By late afternoon, the surreal chimneys of Lake Abbe rise on the horizon. We explore these towering limestone formations before settling into our simple straw huts at the tourist camp. As the sun sets, we return to the chimneys for an unforgettable panorama of golden light and steam drifting into the desert air. Dinner and overnight stay at the campsite.
Highlights of the Day:
- Gulf of Tadjourah Viewpoint – Breathtaking views of the sea and mountains.
- Grand Bara Desert Crossing – Experience the vast and open heartland of Djibouti.
- Lake Abbe Sunset – Watch the chimneys glow in the evening light.

Day 3: Sunrise Over Lake Abbe to the Salted Shores of Lake Assal
We rise early to greet the day where the desert meets the sky. Driving to the smaller chimneys of Lake Abbe, we explore steaming hot springs and surreal rock formations before taking our place at the viewpoint to watch the sunrise ignite the landscape. A short walk leads us to the lake’s edge, where elegant pink flamingos wade through the shallow waters. After returning to camp for breakfast, we begin our journey toward Djibouti’s salt heartland.
The road takes us back through Koutabouya, where Afar herders tend their cattle, and then into Dikhil for lunch. In the afternoon, we stop at Dimbia Canyon, Djibouti’s own “Grand Canyon,” to admire the dramatic panorama over Ghoubet El Kharab Bay, with the mysterious Devil’s Islands resting in its waters.
At last, we reach Lake Assal—the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest lakes on Earth. Here, we walk across dazzling white salt flats and, if you wish, experience the effortless float in its turquoise waters. On our way out, we pause at the Fish Spa hot spring, where tiny fish offer an unexpectedly ticklish natural pedicure. By late afternoon, we cross over to the coastal town of Tadjourah, where dinner and rest await us.
Highlights of the Day:
- Sunrise at Lake Abbe – Golden light over steaming chimneys and desert horizons.
