Day 1: Exploring Ashgabat Beyond the Highlights
After hotel pick-up, set out to discover a different side of Ashgabat, where ancient history, Soviet heritage, and modern architecture come together. Begin at the National Museum of Turkmenistan (closed on Tuesdays and national holidays), home to more than 500,000 artifacts showcasing the country's rich history, from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. Explore exhibitions on archaeology, traditional crafts, jewelry, carpets, and ethnography before admiring the impressive Turkmenbashy Carpet displayed in the museum's upper gallery.
Continue to the Alem Cultural and Entertainment Centre for a ride on the world's largest indoor Ferris wheel, offering panoramic views of Ashgabat's iconic white marble skyline. Afterwards, visit the Earthquake Monument, a moving memorial dedicated to the victims of the devastating 1948 earthquake.
Next, enjoy a guided walk through Ashgabat's historic center, beginning near the Magtymguly Drama Theatre. Pass by the Lenin Statue, one of the few remaining Soviet monuments, admire the well-preserved architecture of the State Central Archive, and continue to the vibrant Russian Bazaar, where you can experience the city's authentic local atmosphere. Your tour concludes with a stroll through Inspiration Park, which features monuments honoring Turkmenistan's greatest poets and writers, before returning to your hotel.
