Overview

Embark on a journey to Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and the mythical home of the ancient Greek gods. According to myth, this majestic peak served as the throne of Zeus and the gathering place for the Twelve Olympians, a mountain shrouded in tales of wonder and mystery. Today, it stands as a symbol of Greece’s rich heritage and a paradise for hikers, offering an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, history, and adventure.

Starting in the village of Litochoro, nestled at the foothills of Mount Olympus, your adventure takes you through ancient pine forests, deep canyons, and high alpine meadows. Follow trails once traversed by shepherds, monks, and pilgrims, and immerse yourself in a landscape where myth and reality converge. The summit of Mytikas (2,918 m), the highest point in Greece, is the ultimate reward—a place where the sky feels close enough to touch, and the vastness of the Aegean Sea unfolds beneath you.

Along the way, discover the historic Agios Dionysios Monastery, a tranquil sanctuary hidden deep within the forest. Hike the legendary Zonaria Trail, which clings dramatically to the mountain’s rocky face. Evenings are spent in traditional mountain huts, where you can reflect on the day’s journey over a warm meal, surrounded by the serene stillness of the mountains.

Challenge yourself on Greece’s most iconic peak and experience the raw, untamed beauty of Mount Olympus in all its glory.

Highlights:

  • Summit the Highest Peaks of Greece, where ancient myths come to life and the air is filled with the spirit of the gods, nearly 3,000 meters above sea level.
  • Take in Unforgettable Views of the Aegean Sea, watching the coastline unfold beneath you from high mountain trails.
  • Experience the Magic of Mountain Life, staying in cozy mountain huts and the lively village of Litochoro, a charming base for your adventure.‍
  • Walk through Mythical Landscapes, from deep gorges and ancient forests to serene alpine meadows, where every step connects you to Greece’s rich heritage and natural wonders.

Your adventure begins in Litochoro, a charming town nestled at the foothills of Mount Olympus. Known as the starting point for numerous summit expeditions, this vibrant village blends traditional charm with a hint of mountaineering spirit.

If time permits, take a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets, soaking in the village's tranquil atmosphere. Visit local shops to gather any last-minute hiking supplies or simply relax with a coffee at one of the cozy cafes, reflecting on the adventure that awaits.

Day 2: Hike to Agios Dionysios Monastery – Following the Enipeas Gorge

Today’s hike follows the picturesque Enipeas River, leading you through dense forests, natural pools, and cascading waterfalls. The soothing sound of the river, coupled with breathtaking views of rugged cliffs and deep gorges, creates a truly enchanting experience.

Your destination is the Agios Dionysios Monastery, founded in the 16th century by Saint Dionysios of Olympus, a revered figure in the Greek Orthodox Church. Once a thriving religious center, the monastery was partially destroyed during World War II but remains a symbol of resilience and spiritual devotion. Its stone walls and tranquil setting, nestled deep in the mountains, provide a serene glimpse into the past.

Though the distance is manageable, the gradual 900-meter ascent presents a rewarding challenge, providing ample opportunities to stop and appreciate the sweeping views and serene surroundings. Upon reaching the monastery, immerse yourself in its tranquil, timeless atmosphere as you wander along the ancient stone paths. Afterward, return to Litochoro by transfer for a well-deserved rest.

Highlights of the Day:

Day 3: Hike to Spilios Agapithos Mountain Hut – Following the E4 Trail

After a transfer back to Agios Dionysios Monastery, your hike begins along the E4 European long-distance trail, winding deeper into the heart of Mount Olympus National Park. Early in the journey, you’ll reach the cave chapel of Saint Dionysios, nestled among the rocks—a tranquil and historic site where the saint once lived in solitude.

The trail follows the Enipeas River, guiding you past a series of natural pools and cascading streams. You will cross the river multiple times, occasionally on wooden bridges and at other times by hopping across stepping stones, all while surrounded by dense forests and towering cliffs. The ascent becomes increasingly challenging, but the rewards are plenty: clear mountain streams, stunning vistas, and an escalating sense of remoteness as you climb higher.

As you ascend through the changing landscape, the forests gradually thin, giving way to alpine terrain and rugged slopes. The final stretch to Mountain Hut A (2,100 m) provides breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, marking the conclusion of today’s trek and your home for the night.

Today’s trek takes you to the heart of Mount Olympus's high alpine world, offering an exhilarating journey across its most iconic ridges and summits. The day begins with a steady ascent through rocky terrain as you leave Mountain Hut A behind. The air becomes thinner as you approach the Skala summit (2,866 m), where breathtaking views unfold in every direction.

From the summit of Skala, the rugged Mytikas peak (2,918 m), Greece’s highest elevation, stands majestically before you. Take a moment to admire the dramatic ridges and watch climbers as they make their way to the summit. Continuing along a spectacular ridge, you reach the summit of Skolio (2,911 m)—another highlight of the day, where panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding peaks stretch out below.

The trail clings to the mountain's rugged face, providing continuous reminders of the scale and grandeur of Olympus. Your hike culminates at the Plateau of the Muses, a tranquil high-altitude plain encircled by jagged peaks.

Here, you’ll find Mountain Refuge Kakkalos, a charming mountain hut nestled in this dramatic landscape. Unwind, take in the evening views, and get ready for another day filled with adventure.

A stop near the Orlias stream offers a perfect opportunity to rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, with the sound of flowing water adding a soothing soundtrack to your journey. The trail continues to the Church of Agios Konstantinos, where a transfer takes you back to Litochoro.
